Color Guard Audition Rubric

This rubric was designed by David Conrad to evaluate students auditioning for the color guard squad at El Paso High School in El Paso, Illinois. Five components of successful color guard performers are assessed: rhythm/coordination, presentation, routine timing, routine technique, and marching skills.

A series of clinics are scheduled after school. Students are taught the content of the auditions during the clinics. In El Paso, they are taught the routine and skills necessary to perform the first song in the fall show. A panel of three judges -- the band director, the choir director, and the outgoing student captain -- would adjudicate the auditions.

Before the auditions begin, one exemplarity student will be selected to model a performance for the judges. This student is an experienced member who has demonstrated a high skill level during the clinic sessions. This allows the judges to calibrate their rating scales. The model sets the benchmark by which all other performances -- for better or worse -- will be judged.
