
We asked rising 5th and 6th graders to submit questions they had about middle school. Here are the answers to their questions.
How long will I have to get to class?6th graders will have three minutes in-between classes. Most of your classes are right next door, you'll have plenty of time!
The rules are very similar to your current school. You must be respectful, responsible, and productive. The major change is that we will use more morning and after school detentions at Manteno Middle School.
Most class sizes are less than 25 students per class.
In 6th grade, each core class is one hour long. In 5th grade, your core classes are different lengths depending on your teacher.

Your class schedule will list your teachers and your classes.
We have a PBIS Cart that you can buy things from. We sell "free homework passes".
6th grade students report to the gymnasium in the morning. 5th grade students report to the cafeteria.
In 6th grade, students may choose their seats as a privilege of good behavior. All 6th grade students eat lunch at the same time.

Will we have hall lockers next year? How do I get the combination?Yes. All students will have hallway lockers next year. Each locker is about five feet tall. They have a built-in padlock with a 3-digit combo.
5th grade students will use their hall lockers to store their coats, lunches, and PE shoes, but books will be stored in class.
6th grade students will also store their books in the hall lockers. 6th graders will have a PE locker for their PE uniform.
We recommend that parents have their children practice using a combination padlock this summer to help them get used to operating their lockers. All students will receive their locker combination when they attend orientation. It will be printed on their schedule. Keep your combination a secret! If you forget your locker combo, report to the office or your PE teacher.
The doors for school will open at 7:35 am. School starts at 8:05 am. School ends at 2:55 pm.
6th grade students may purchase food from hot lunch or the a la carte line. 5th grade students may purchase food from the hot lunch line. Both grades may use the two microwave ovens to heat their food.
6th grade students do not have classroom parties at holidays. 5th grade students will have classroom parties.
What can we wear to school?The dress code stays the same.

6th graders must wear a PE uniform. These are available for purchase from the PE teachers for $25. It consists of a white PE shirt and purple PE shorts. We also recommend using an anti-perspirant and/or deodorant. Uniforms and personal products are kept in PE lockers.
5th graders do not wear a PE uniform. They must provide PE tennis shoes which are kept in their lockers.
We sponsor three or dances per year for of students in grades 6,7, and 8. 5th graders will not participate in dances.
That decision will be made by your teachers and the principal.....working together.
6th graders will not have recess. 5th graders will have one recess period per day.

5th grade students may continue participate in the intra-mural sports programs that meet in our district.
