David Conrad, Conductor
For eight years, David Conrad taught music in the Manteno (Illinois) schools. His responsibilities
included the district
show choir program, elementary band, and middle school band and chorus. Under his leadership,
Manteno Magic and
Grand
Paws won numerous championships
and caption awards in show choir. He is equally comfortable teaching instrumental
and vocal music to musicians of all ages.

Since April 2006, Conrad has assumed a new education position as Principal at Manteno Middle School.
His
music education training includes a B.S.M.E. from University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the M.M.Ed. from Illinois State
University. He has completed additional music study at Iowa Wesleyan University, University of Utah,
and VanderCook College.
Conrad also holds an MA in educational administration
from Governors State University and has
studied
educational law at the University of Illinois
at Springfield.
An author of numerous articles and teaching resources, his work has been
published on-line and in NFHS Music Journal,
The
Irish Music Teacher,
Educational
Leadership, and School
Community
Relations. His assessment rubrics have been adopted and studied by
schools and universities throughout the United States and Canada. His
successful leadership workshop, Telling Your Story, helps educators communicate effectively through classroom-level
public relations. This in-service workshop was presented at the
2004
IMEA All-State Conference and was the subject of a training video produced by Governors State University. Conrad
has also appeared in the May 2001 Teaching Music magazine
in an interview about the professional issues of teacher burnout and
retention.
His leadership includes service to the Illinois Elementary School Association,
Community Arts Council of Kankakee County, Illinois Education Association, and the Kankakee Municipal Band. He has served as an assessor for the National Board For Professional Teaching
Standards. He has adjudicated music contests for choirs, concert bands,
and marching bands in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, and Florida.
He regularly performs in the GRT Big Band, New
Horizons Band of Kankakee County, New Horizons Brass Quintet, and the Kankakee Municipal Band.
He is a
co-founder of the River Valley Wind Ensemble and serves as its
director/conductor.

ILLINOIS - On August 19, The Daily Journal published an article
about Manteno Education Association President David Conrad
working as an assessor this summer for the National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards. The article also praises the
impact of National Board Certification on the teaching
profession. "The idea is this will improve the profession and
this will professionalize teaching," said Conrad.
