David Conrad, Conductor

For eight years, David Conrad taught music in the Manteno (Illinois) schools.  His responsibilities included the district show choir program, elementary band, and middle school band and chorus.  Under his leadership, Manteno Magic and Grand Paws won numerous championships and caption awards in show choir.  He is equally comfortable teaching instrumental and vocal music to musicians of all ages.

Since April 2006, Conrad has assumed a new education position as Principal at Manteno Middle School.

His music education training includes a B.S.M.E. from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the M.M.Ed. from Illinois State University.  He has completed additional music study at Iowa Wesleyan University, University of Utah, and VanderCook College.   Conrad also holds an MA in educational administration from Governors State University and has studied educational law at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

An author of numerous articles and teaching resources, his work has been published on-line and in NFHS Music Journal, The Irish Music Teacher, Educational Leadership, and School Community Relations.  His assessment rubrics have been adopted and studied by schools and universities throughout the United States and Canada.  His successful leadership workshop, Telling Your Story, helps educators communicate effectively through classroom-level public relations.  This in-service workshop was presented at the 2004 IMEA All-State Conference and was the subject of a training video produced by Governors State University.   Conrad has also appeared in the May 2001 Teaching Music magazine in an interview about the professional issues of teacher burnout and retention.

His leadership includes service to the Illinois Elementary School Association, Community Arts Council of Kankakee County, Illinois Education Association, and the Kankakee Municipal Band.  He has served as an assessor for the National Board For Professional Teaching Standards.   He has adjudicated music contests for choirs, concert bands, and marching bands in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, and Florida.

He regularly performs in the GRT Big Band, New Horizons Band of Kankakee County, New Horizons Brass Quintet, and the Kankakee Municipal Band

He is a co-founder of the River Valley Wind Ensemble and serves as its director/conductor.

ILLINOIS - On August 19, The Daily Journal published an article about Manteno Education Association President David Conrad working as an assessor this summer for the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The article also praises the impact of National Board Certification on the teaching profession. "The idea is this will improve the profession and this will professionalize teaching," said Conrad.
